Eight Small and Affordable Handguns for Everyday Carry

Eight Small and Affordable Handguns for Everyday Carry

A light, simple and easily concealable firearm that is suitable for regular self-defense carry is accessible on any budget. There's a world of options out there for under $500, and there are even quite a few good choices available if you're willing to spend no more than $300. There's even at least one option that you'll probably be able to get for $100 or less.

These eight handguns are among the best available picks for something you can conceal without much trouble and take with you on your daily routine.

1) Cobra 380

If price is your main concern, you need look no further than the 380 series from Cobra firearms. These .380 handguns have held the title of "cheapest gun in America" for some years now. The MSRP is $129, but they can be found on sale new for as little as $100 and pre-owned for even less. The price point alone might put some people off of them, but they are reasonably well-made for something that won't see heavy use.

Both a compact and full-size model are available for the same price. The magazine holds five rounds in both cases. This may not be the best choice for absolute beginners, however. The C380 is both heavier and has more kick than you might expect for the size, and jams are notoriously tricky to clear.

2) Kel-Tec P11

Kel-Tec is a longtime reputable manufacturer, and their P11 has been on the market for a long time and has a good reputation. It's a good way to get a 9mm in a compact size at an MSRP of about $270, with a standard 10-round magazine.

One feature that makes it particularly good for new shooters is the longer-than-usual trigger pull, which makes it harder to discharge the firearm accidentally. Routine cleaning is also easier than it is with most comparable handguns.

3) Walther PPS Classic / M1

Formerly the M1 for many years, Walther's signature small 9mm handgun is now called the "Classic." This is overall the nicest handgun on this list, but you'll have to pay a bit more for the quality. The MSRP is $469, but they can be found for as much as $150 less than that on sale or pre-owned. Standard magazines hold seven rounds.

Aside from the reliable craftsmanship, the other main advantage of the PPS Classic is that unlike many other small handguns, it isn't a pain to shoot. Other models can be a pain to train with because of uncomfortably small grips or slides that pinch hands; the PPS Classic is a relative pleasure to shoot and won't have you dreading trips to the range.

4) DoubleTap Derringer

If you want to get as tiny and light as possible, the DoubleTap is the way to go. With only a two-round capacity, it is truly an "emergency use only" option. It is also the simplest in terms of maintenance, as it cannot even be opened for a typical field strip; you simply check the barrels for obstructions at regular intervals and blow a little compressed air down them to clear them.

Given the limited functionality, the MSRP of $499 seems high, but gun dealers often have them for less than half that price new.

5) Tristar T120

Another compact 9mm crafted by a manufacturer that supplies militaries and law enforcement agencies around the world, the T120 is a slightly larger option than the others listed here. It comes with a standard 17 round magazine.

The suggested retail price is $500, but you'll likely find it being sold for closer to $400 new.

6) SCCY CPX-2

This sub-compact has an unusually long trigger pull for its size (similar to the Kel-Tec P11). It can also be equipped with a laser sight by Laserlyte made specifically for this model.

The MSRP is $310, but it can commonly be found for much a lower price. If you're asking for one from a dealer, SCCY is commonly pronounced as"sky" since that was the company's original name.

7) SAR B6P Sarsilmaz Compact

Like the Tristar T120, this is a CZ-75 clone, but comes in at a much lower MSRP of $300. You may see them referred to as the EAA SAR in some places, but this is an outdated name for newer models, as EAA (the importer) ended their contract with SAR. Any model still labeled as EAA should be from 2014 or earlier.

This pistol is a good choice if you want a lighter two-stage trigger. The standard magazine holds 13 rounds.

8) Taurus PT709

This sub-compact 9mm by Taurus is up there with the Walther PPS in overall quality, and comes in at a very similar price point (an MSRP of $500, but a real-world price closer to $300).

It's designed to have low recoil and be appropriate for users who may have issues with grip or wrist strength, yet gets high marks for accuracy and build quality. Expect a standard magazine of seven rounds.

As this list demonstrates, not only can you get a lightweight and concealable handgun of very good quality for $300 or less, but there is also a wide variety of options to choose from.
