The FFL eZ Check System

The FFL eZ Check System

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF) operates a website to let anyone quickly check to see if a Federal Firearms License (FFL) is active: FFL eZ Check

The FFL eZ Check is simple to use. Click the link and plug in the FFL numbers. Hit submit and the website confirms the license is current or says the license is expired.

"FFL eZ Check does not validate Type 03 (Collectors of Curios and Relics) and Type 06 (Manufacturer of Ammunition) licenses. All attempts to check the validity of Type 03 and Type 06 licenses will result in an error message, even though the licenses may be valid. An FFL should not use this error message as reason to deny dealing with a Type 03 licensee," BATF says.

What FFL eZ Check is Not

The FFL eZ Check is not the same as getting a copy of an FFL. When FFL holders buy and sell firearms to each other, both dealers must have a physical copy of the other's license. BATF said that copy may be mailed, hand-delivered, emailed or faxed.

"Additionally, the license itself states that it must contain an original signature. This does not mean that you have to hand sign every single copy. The ATF has decided that as long as the person whose signature appears intended it as an original signature, it is valid, regardless of whether the signature is done by hand in pen, stamped, or auto-penned," says FFL123.

Regardless of how the license is sent, courtesy and common sense say everything on the copy should be clear and easy to read.
